Resumo
Superalloys are widely used in the aerospace and gas oil industry due to their excellent properties at high temperatures such as their corrosion resistance, wear resistance, and low thermal conductivity. They are considered low machinability alloys because they have high work hardening rate, good ductility, high mechanical resistance at high temperatures and high chemical affinity with most tool materials. Thus, the objective of this work is to evaluate tool wear during turning of the Inconel 625 alloy by means of experimental planning. Cutting speed (60 and 80 m/min), feed (0.08 and 0.16 mm/rev) and machining strategy (longitudinal cut and taper turning) were applied in a full factorial matrix. The end-of-life criteria of the tool were 15 minutes of cutting or until the edge flank wear reached VB = 0.3 mm. The tool used in this work was a CNMG 12 04 04 insert, class ISO S15 from Sandvik Coromant with PVD TiAlN coating. The results indicate that flank and notch wear occur under all conditions and edge chipping is a type of failure present in some of the conditions. Low cutting speeds tend to generate material adhesion leading to the formation of a sharp edge and compromising the workpiece finish. The taper turning contributed to the increase of tool life.
