Resumo
Abstract. Micromachining is a manufacturing process capable to producing pieces with complex geometries and dimensional accuracy of 1µm. However, there is a gap in the micro-machinability of ceramic materials, such as pre-sintered Yttrium oxide Zirconia Polycrystals (Y-TZP), especially in the dentistry segment. Based on this, this work shows results about the wear using a 1mm diameter carbide tool to milling a zirconia block. Surface roughness measurements could also be monitored in order to correlate them with the evolution of the wear on the cutting tools and their influence on the surface finish, using depth of cut of 100µm, cutting speed fixed adopted of 31.4 m/min, and cutting feed per edge of 10µm/edge. The applied technique for wear evaluation was based on in images from a scanning electron microscope by overlapping the images of not used microfresa and after milling, measuring the gradual wear at the end of each rectangular cavity. The micromilling with four cutting edges showed abrasion wear with a mean diameter reduction of 10.4%. Materials adhesion was also observed in the tool surface presenting a mean roughness (Ra) of 0.17µm at the end of the fourth rectangular cavity. The micromilling with two cutting edges presented abrasion wear with a mean diameter reduction of 6.6%, presenting a mean roughness (Ra) of 0.07µm for a total theoretical volume of material removed from 1036mm3 by micromilling.
